Teacher Leader Certification Academy (TLCA)

  • The Teacher Leader Certification Academy is a two-year program that meets monthly from September through June each year. The curriculum is grounded in the ETS Teacher Leader Model Standards published in 2011 and the research-based leadership model from James Kouzes and Barry Posner. This model, described in the book The Leadership Challenge, is framed around five practices of exemplary leadership.

The workload will consist of monthly assignments and the development of a professional Capstone Project during the second year that will encompass your learning in both the standards and the five practices. The monthly commitment is 6-10 hours of work outside of class sessions, though most of your learning will be directly applicable to the work you do every day and will enhance your effectiveness in your current leadership efforts. It will include reflections on the reading and on personal leadership growth, and will feature an online component involving threaded discussions and other brief content pieces to enhance your learning. It is similar to a graduate level course and you have the option of receiving masters level credits from California State University, San Bernardino.

This course will prepare you to meet the unique challenges of teacher leadership as teacher leaders lead primarily through influence without the benefit of positional authority. Because technology promises to play a critical role in the teaching profession in the 21st century, you will be exposed to an array of online tools for communication, productivity, collaboration, and presentation. You will use the Blackboard LMS (Learning Management System) to submit assignments, participate in threaded discussions, and create wikiprojects to share with your colleagues.
